Here we have the second cassette release by Webcore, called 'The Great Unfolding' which came out on the A Real Kavoom label in 1986. Second time around their sound became more accessible and dynamic than on the 'Cinematography' tape and more danceable, although the ambient and poetry interludes remained. Gigs often now featured a drummer as opposed to the drum tapes they had formerly used, sax replaced violin, and backing singers had joined. 'Captain's Table' from the first tape appeared again in an overhauled version, as did the superb full band reworking of 'Nothing Can Stop Us Now' from Eden's 'Flipside' album.

and this is a revelation! knew 'nothing can stop us now' from a (as previously mentioned) bdd compilation tape - was led to believe i'd seen them supporting cardiacs at the marquee (1986?) but i dont remember anything like this, just a couple of women waving a sword around? perhaps i'd been misinformed. nonetheless, thanks for more excellent music!
ReplyDeleteI never saw Webcore play at the Marquee myself (I think they did support Psychic TV there once - but I could be wrong), could have been them with The Cardiacs, dunno - the women with a sword bit doesn't sound much like them though, they always seemed a bit 'cooler' than that, LOL
ReplyDeleteFrom the horses mouth!!! I was one of the backing singers in Webcore :-) We NEVER swung swords! and yes we were much cooler than that! Tee hee x
ReplyDeleteThey opened for the Nephilim at the Marquee - don't recall swords.....
ReplyDeleteHi Karen, great to hear from you, thanks for dropping by and for clearing up the bit about the sword-swinging, couldn't imagine that happening during a Webcore set myself, hehe.
ReplyDeleteAnon, ah the Nephilim, missed that one - thanks for the info, enjoy the music.
Loved Webcore, and how brilliant to see some pictures! Always more than 'just' a band- a life experience that uplifted and energised me, definately!!
ReplyDeleteHi Anji and thanks for your comments - I think a lot of people have similar thoughts about the Webcore 'experience'.
ReplyDeletedid i forget to mention that they were waving it around very cooly?
ReplyDeleteI've been getting right back into the 'Core of late - chatted briefly with Michael W. who was very cool and friendly :)
ReplyDeleteThank ye very much for this!
You're welcome PPT - always good to hear that people who brought us all so much pleasure through their music are doing well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best from back in the day. Converted all my Webcore stuff to 320k MP3 years ago and still play it regularly, used to go to most of the Club Dog gigs as well as Alice In Wonderland :-)
Michael West and Nik Nimbus, current drummer with Here & Now, have been tentatively collaborating on some material under the moniker "Crawlspace", the Nimbus's 12 year ongoing project. If I hear any news I'll be back to let you know :)
ReplyDeleteHi pOoter, sounds like we share a lot of the same musical memories - thanks for your comment.
ReplyDeletepinkpressthreat, ta for stopping by and for commenting.
ReplyDeleteThe project you mention sounds like something I'd like to hear, please post any updates when you can. Cheers.
I have actual pictures of a woman waving a sword around at The Marquee - it was Webcore supporting Psychic TV all right...
ReplyDeleteWhere can we see these pictures? And did anyone lose their heads?
ReplyDelete;-)
ta very much for taking the time to upload all this great stuff
ReplyDeleteThank you for dropping by, stopthecity - all I've done is to try to play a small part in paying back all the good folks online who've introduced me to some really great music.
ReplyDeletehi marina - thanks for confirming that it wasnt just a process of my fevered imagination... strange thing is that i was mad on ptv at thee time, but don't remember ever seeing them at the marquee (although i do recall buying an organ from you in the corridor...)
